THE CITY
THAT FORGOT
ITS TOMORROW.
Long before the towers began to carry signals, there was a city that kept every unfinished goodbye. Its people built a knight from dark river stone and old armor to guard the things no one could bear to throw away.
Then one night, a storm opened a seam in time. Future objects fell through it: glowing phones, headphones full of voices, little silver crosses, and a photograph of someone with an impossible blond haircut. The knight gathered them all. When he touched the photograph, its face settled over his own stone features.
His armor stayed where it belonged. His hair did not. The neat bob is the shape of that stolen instant, and the curled mustache is the last trace of the man he used to be. He is painted in bruised gray because the storm washed nearly every color from him. Only the hair kept the lightning's pale gold.
The first word the broken phone ever spoke was Jean. The second was white. He took both, because a thing with a name is harder to lose.
He walks the city now, returning lost messages to people who have not been born yet. Some say he is waiting for the photograph's owner. Jean says he is waiting to remember whether that person was ever him.
